Dry, in production since 1982, was the first and for several years the only Alessi cutlery model. "Items of cutlery are held in the hand for very little time" - Achille Castiglioni said - "they are not work tools that need to have the shape of the hand." The ergonomics in Dry cutlery is not in the design of the handle, but in the end piece that must fit the type of food for which it is intended. They have wide and long prongs, capable scoops, and elongated blades, to which are added the characteristic ingot shape of the handles and the thin neck joint, which is a technically difficult detail to execute.

For Achille Castiglioni objects had to fulfill two essential requirements: they should offer practical solutions to the small problems arising while “being at the table,” possibly with intelligent functional innovation, and they should also satisfy the public’s taste, for example, for the finish of metal.
